| Communication – Yes that’s right I am talking to you! | |

It is amazing how often people approach me and ask for assistance due to the fact that their teams are breaking apart and their business is suffering the consequences of what is often categorized as negative team member behavior.
The Leaders of these teams often state that they have one or two ‘difficult’ people who will just not change their behavior or improve their individual performance no matter what they try.
In my work with these Leaders, I often find that it is a case of not understanding what makes these so called ‘difficult’ team members tick, which means that they are unable to motivate and influence them at their deepest levels. If this situation is allowed to continue it can ultimately result in a full communication breakdown with all ‘parties at war’, and this is sure to have a significantly negative impact on team culture and performance.
Have you ever had this situation in a team environment you have worked in? It is not a great place to be.
If you are a Leader reading this blog, then it is important that you take responsibility for these "difficult" people and the fact that you haven't been able to influence them to make a change. I recommend to make some time to really understand what makes your people tick, and openly talk to them about this with courage and authenticity. By doing this you may be bypassing a great deal of potential upset and trouble down the track.
It is amazing how many times I have seen the people that are labeled as ‘difficult’ become the top performer when they are actually understood as a person and not just a team member.
